Brea de Tajo
Village
Brea de Tajo is a municipality of about 580 inhabitants located at the southeastern edge of the Community of Madrid, in the Alcarria de Chinchón, near the border with Guadalajara. It sits on a plateau of limestone and gypsum soils, of harsh dry farming except in very rainy years. Founded as an Arab hamlet dependent on Almoguera, it broke away from it as a town on 14 October 1501 by privilege of the Villazgo issued in Pastrana, confirmed by the Catholic Monarchs and by Charles V; until 1257 it had belonged to the Order of Calatrava. Its neoclassical church of the Asunción was built between 1777 and 1780.
Church of la Asunción de Brea
Monument
A neoclassical church built in just three years, between 1777 and 1780, over an earlier chapel; it holds a work by Luis de Morales and frescoes by Ginés Andrés de Aguirre, and housed the oldest organ in the region until the Civil War.
