What to see and do in Orusco de Tajuña

Orusco de Tajuña
Village
Orusco de Tajuña is a Madrid locality of about 1,530 inhabitants, whose name alludes to the abundance of cold waters from the streams and springs of the area. Of pre-Roman Ligurian origin, it belonged to the jurisdiction of Alcalá until 1554, the year it gained its independence and the title of town. It preserves the Baroque church of San Juan Evangelista, from the 17th century, with three naves, Tuscan columns and a 14th-century Renaissance baptismal font; the Virgen de Bellaescusa is venerated there today, crowned perpetual mayor of the village in 1962. The medieval hermitage of the Virgen de Bellaescusa, from the 13th century, recalls the legend of two hunters of the order of Santiago who gave up fighting a duel before her apparition; it was later occupied by three hermits, founders of the Order of St Jerome.
