What to see and do in Villarejo de Salvanés

Villarejo de Salvanés
Village
Villarejo de Salvanés is a town of the Madrid region in the Las Vegas comarca, with about 8,040 inhabitants, situated between the rivers Tajo and Tajuña. It belonged to the Order of Santiago from the 12th century, and at the end of the 15th century its encomienda became the head of the Encomienda Mayor de Castilla, which dominates it with its keep. At the end of the 16th century, Luis de Requesens y Zúñiga, lieutenant to John of Austria at the Battle of Lepanto, ordered a church built here to Our Lady of the Victory of Lepanto, today the village's patron saint, in memory of the defeat inflicted on the Turks. On 3 January 1866 General Prim attempted his pronunciamiento here against the government of O'Donnell. Its fields yield oil and wine produced in a cooperative.
