What to see and do in Torrejón de la Calzada

Torrejón de la Calzada
Village
Torrejón de la Calzada is a municipality of about 10,600 inhabitants in the Community of Madrid, in the upper basin of the Tagus, whose name recalls a watchtower raised beside the road that linked Toledo with Madrid, Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara, in the border zone between the Christian and Muslim kingdoms. Its territory took shape towards the end of the 11th century, after the conquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085, and it preserves evidence of Visigothic settlements from the 6th and 7th centuries and Muslim ones from the caliphal period; towards the end of the 15th century, however, it was left depopulated. It was refounded in 1531. It today belongs to the judicial district of Valdemoro. Its oldest festival is that of San Sebastián, on 20 January.

Curiosity
Its name comes from the Latin turris, after a watchtower that guarded the road from Toledo to Madrid in frontier times; deserted in the late 15th century, it was repopulated in 1531 by Francisco de Pero Abad and Bartolomé de Harija.

Monument
The oldest building in the village, already mentioned in a 1427 visitation record of the archbishopric of Toledo: it was built over a medieval structure, grew between the 16th and 18th centuries and had to be rebuilt after the bombing it suffered during the Civil War at the hands of the rebel side. It is under the patronage of San Cristóbal Mártir, although the town's patron saint is San Sebastián. Juan Ortega Rubio already described it in 1921 in his Historia de Madrid y de los pueblos de su provincia.
