What to see and do in Torrejón de Velasco

Torrejón de Velasco
Village
Torrejón de Velasco is a Madrid municipality of about 4,900 inhabitants, 28 kilometres from the capital, with a castle whose keep gives the village its name, surrounded by a wall with nine semicircular towers. In 1332 Alfonso XI granted the town to Sebastián Domingo, count of Puñonrostro, whose lordship came to cover in the 16th century also Casarrubuelos, Cubas, Batres, Griñón, El Álamo and Villamanta. Having lost its military importance after the Reconquest, the castle served as a prison for illustrious figures, such as Martín Cortés, marquess of Valle, or Juan Alfonso de Aragón, count of Ribagorza, condemned to death for uxoricide. In 1541 Francisco Arias de Bobadilla, protagonist of the Miracle of Empel of 1585, was born here.
Castle of Torrejón de Velasco
Monument
A fortress of the Counts of Puñonrostro laid out around a central courtyard enclosed by a wall with nine semicylindrical towers; its main gate opens beneath a pointed arch and it has been undergoing restoration in phases for years.
Sites of the Cerro de los Batallones
Curiosity
Discovered by chance in 1991 during mining surveys, its ten Miocene sites have yielded tens of thousands of fossils from about nine million years ago, with a concentration of carnivores unique in the world. They correspond geologically to the Upper Vallesian and are dominated by vertebrate remains, with a smaller presence of invertebrates and plants. The site has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the palaeontological zone category since 21 August 2001, and in 2022 the National Geographic Society included it among the seventeen most important palaeontological sites in the Iberian Peninsula.
Church of San Esteban Protomártir de Torrejón de Velasco
Monument
A mixed fabric of ashlar and brick braced with buttresses, in the manner of Madrid's Mudejar and popular Renaissance work; its three-bell tower was raised in the late 17th century and the church was rebuilt in the 1960s.
The discovery of Cerro de los Batallones
Historical milestone
Building works uncovered by chance in 1991 the remains of saber-toothed tiger on the hill. The later excavations have made the site one of the richest Miocene fauna deposits in Europe.
