Cubas de la Sagra
Village
Cubas de la Sagra is a village in the Community of Madrid, in the comarca of La Sagra, with around 7,200 inhabitants over 12.82 km². It was first called Fuentes Claras and, according to tradition, was founded by the Arabs; it was taken by Alfonso VI on the way to Toledo and Henry III the Ailing granted it town status, reaching up to 1,000 inhabitants. It belonged to the lords of the Cerda family, among them Luis de la Cerda y Rojas, chief magistrate of Toledo; Charles V spent the night in the town in 1525, on his way to the monastery of Guadalupe. There, in 1449, the shepherdess Inés Martínez said she saw the Virgin, giving rise to the monastery of Santa María de la Cruz, which sister Juana de la Cruz enlarged; it also preserves the church of San Andrés Apóstol with its Renaissance font.

Monument
Declared a Monumento histórico-artístico in 1983, it has stood since the late 15th century with three naves covered by ribbed vaults in which Mudéjar, late Gothic and Renaissance styles intersect; it holds a Renaissance baptismal font. Its original construction may date from the late 15th or early 16th century, and it is described both in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico and in Juan Ortega Rubio's Historia de Madrid y de los pueblos de su provincia, of 1921. It was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 19 January 1983; today it holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Streams and poplar groves of Cubas de la Sagra
Nature
Barely three streams run across its twelve square kilometres, the Arboleda, the Prado and the Valdeano, but the groundwater sustains stands of black and white poplar and willow; red-legged partridge, hoopoe and little owl show themselves in the fields.
The apparitions to Inés Martínez
Historical milestone
The girl Inés Martínez Sánchez said she had seen the Virgin for the fourth time in 1449 in a field within the municipality. On that spot the monastery of Santa María de la Cruz was later raised, and the village commemorates the date every year.
