What to see and do in Casarrubuelos

Casarrubuelos
Village
Casarrubuelos is a locality in the Community of Madrid, 29.8 km from the capital, beside the road to Toledo, between the territories of Cubas de la Sagra and, already in the province of Toledo, Ugena and Illescas. It has around 4,300 inhabitants and its coat of arms, approved in 1986, was ruled on by the Real Academia de la Historia. Its church of Santiago Apóstol, from the 18th century, has a single nave with a pentagonal apse. Every 1 May it holds the Fiestas del Mayo, in which a tree is raised and decorated, and on 25 July it honors its patron saint, Saint James.

Activity
Every 1 May the young men bring a poplar some thirty metres tall from the riverside grove, fit its crown on and raise it in the square in honour of the Most Holy Christ of the Vera Cruz; the maypole stays up until the end of the month.

Curiosity
In the second decade of the 16th century the place, like Illescas, changed hands and became a town under royal jurisdiction within the sexmo of Villaverde, in the Community of Town and Land of Madrid; from then on it was called Casarrubuelos de Madrid.
