What to see and do in Parla

Parla
Village
Parla is a municipality in the Community of Madrid, documented since 1255 and with around 137,000 inhabitants today. Its name has given rise to several legends: the best known tells that a mute young woman drank the water from a fountain in the place and miraculously began to speak, “a parlar,” an episode recalled today by the well preserved inside the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad; other versions attribute the name to a deaf-mute lackey of King Alfonso X or to the family of a certain Pero Parla, while a more prosaic theory derives it from the Latin palus, “marsh.” The village also preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, of 16th-century Plateresque-Isabelline style.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
Monument
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad was built in the early sixteenth century and completely rebuilt in the seventeenth by the architect Bartolomé Hurtado, who gave it simple lines, a tower with a three-tiered belfry and a white rendered façade with grey details imitating granite; above the door is displayed its own coat of arms. It has paid homage to the patroness of Parla since 1777 and was blessed on 28 September 1670, the date on which its September festivities are still held. Inside it holds a well linked to the founding legend of Parla: a mute woman is said to have recovered her speech after drinking its waters, an origin tradition attributes to the town's name.
