Humanes de Madrid
Village
Humanes de Madrid is a municipality in the south of the Community of Madrid, 23 kilometres from the capital, with about 20,500 inhabitants. Its name may derive from an old paleo-European hydronymic root linked to the idea of a riverbed. The first document mentioning it dates from 1141, when Alfonso VII granted the town to Pedro Brimonis; his successor, Pelayo Pérez, gave it the Carta Puebla in 1173 and, three years later, in 1176, handed Humanes over to the Order of St John of Jerusalem, though the order never came to exercise the lordship effectively. The municipality preserves remains of occupation from the Bronze Age and Roman times. Its church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, damaged during the Civil War, was restored in the fifties and sixties of the last century.
Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Humanes
Monument
The church, built in the 17th century in stone, brick and lime with three naves, was hit in August 1936 by a bomb that destroyed much of the building; only the Toledan Mudéjar-style tower and the chapel walls remained standing, and these were rebuilt in 1953 and 1963 respectively. The chapel of the Santísimo Cristo de la Columna, designed by Ventura Rodríguez around 1758, houses a polychrome wood carving from the 17th century reputed to have been carved from the wood of a plum tree from Humanes; tradition holds that its sculptor died before finishing it, which is why it was given glass eyes. Also preserved are the Cristo de la Agonía and the Virgen de la Guía, the oldest image in the church, dating from the 16th century.
The lordship of the Ayala family in Humanes
Curiosity
In 1445 Juan II granted the lordship of the place to Pedro López de Ayala, known as the One-Eyed, whose house would later receive the title of Counts of Fuensalida; Humanes remained the property of that family and did not pass from Toledo to Madrid until 1833.
The settlement charter of Humanes
Historical milestone
Pelayo Pérez granted the fuero that fixed the rights of the settlers of the place, donated by Alfonso VII in 1141 after the Christian resettlement. Three years later the town passed to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
