What to see and do in Griñón

Griñón
Village
Griñón has been a town since 1383, by privilege of Henry III the Ailing of Castile, located in the south of the Community of Madrid, in the natural comarca of La Sagra, and today has around 10,800 inhabitants. Its founding goes back to the Arab period and it belonged to the alfoz of Madrid from the Middle Ages, until Alfonso VI of León reconquered it; in 1274 it was a hamlet belonging to Juan Ramírez de Guzmán under the jurisdiction of Madrid. Its numerous manor houses, used by residents of Madrid as a summer retreat, gave it a lordly and aristocratic air from early on. Its parish church of la Asunción preserves a 14th-century Mudéjar ribbed vault and a bell tower, and the convent of the Poor Clares of la Encarnación was founded in 1523.
Convent of las Clarisas de la Encarnacion de Grinon
Monument
Founded in 1523 by Rodrigo de Vivar, canon of Zamora, it preserves a chancel covered with a Mudejar-tradition timber roof and a 16th-century altarpiece; it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) by Decree 131/2022.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Griñón
Monument
Its bell tower and ribbed vault point to 14th-century Mudejar work; inside, the standouts are an altarpiece with panels by the painter Juan Correa de Vivar and a 17th-century gadrooned font.
La Salle College of Griñón
Curiosity
In 1915 the countess María del Carmen de Xifré y Chacón gave an eight-hectare estate to the De La Salle Brothers; the school, opened in 1919, served as a field hospital in the Civil War and received the wounded by a railway branch line.
Pine forest of El Carraperal
Nature
A century-old pine wood on the edge of the town, crossed by a stream and laid out as a public park; it is the municipality's main wooded space and connects on foot with the Griñón town promenade.
Griñón separates from Cubas
Historical milestone
The abolition of the lordships by the Cortes of Cádiz turned the place into an independent municipality and put an end to centuries of shared administration with neighbouring Cubas, with which it had formed a single lordship since the thirteenth century.
