What to see and do in Pinto

Pinto
Village
Pinto is a town of around 56,000 inhabitants located about 20 kilometers south of Madrid city. Its name may come from the Latin punctum, since it was once believed that the town occupied the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula, a legend recorded today on a monolith in the Egido de la Fuente park. King Peter I the Cruel granted it the title of town in 1359, and in its 14th-century Éboli Tower the Princess of Éboli was held prisoner between 1579 and 1592, the year of her death. Pinto is also the origin of the saying “between Pinto and Valdemoro,” used to refer to something of undefined location; tradition explains its origin with various stories, among them that of a drunkard who fell while crossing the stream that separated the two villages.
Tower of Éboli
Monument
Seigneurial tower of square plan, four storeys and rounded corners, raised around the middle of the fourteenth century by Íñigo López de Orozco. It served as a prison for nobles: Ana de Mendoza, princess of Éboli, arrested on 28 July 1579, was confined in it for six months, and later the secretary Antonio Pérez.
Old chocolate factory of Pinto
Monument
A factory built in 1866 by the Compañía Colonial to make chocolate on the outskirts of Pinto; of the original complex three buildings survive along with the slender brick chimney, one of the few 19th-century industrial remains in the south of Madrid.
Monolith of the geographic centre of the Iberian Peninsula
Curiosity
In the Egido de la Fuente park a monolith recalls Pinto's old claim to be the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula, put down to measurements from Islamic times and alluded to in the place name itself, which tradition derives from the Latin punctum.
Arqueopinto
Activity
The Gonzalo Arteaga archaeological park, devoted to bringing prehistory to a wider public through reconstructions of excavation sites and experimental archaeology workshops; it works as a leading teaching centre in the south of the Region of Madrid.
The Princess of Éboli, imprisoned in the tower
Historical milestone
Felipe II ordered Ana de Mendoza to be shut up in the keep of Pinto after the murder of Escobedo and the fall of Antonio Pérez. She remained there until February 1580, when she was moved to the fortress of Santorcaz.
