What to see and do in Fuenlabrada

Fuenlabrada
Village
Fuenlabrada is a municipality of Madrid, in its metropolitan area, seventeen kilometers southwest of the capital, which today is close to 190,000 inhabitants after being founded in 1375 beside “an old fountain” by residents of the hamlets of Fregacedos and Loranca. For centuries it was a village of farmers and herders until, in the early 1970s, population growth and industrial estates reduced its status as a commuter town; since 2006 it has been covered by the Law of Large Cities, and its Cobo Calleja industrial estate is one of the largest in the European Union. Its motto, “Fuenlabrada already existed before Spain was won,” appears on the municipal coat of arms. The church of San Esteban Protomártir, recorded in 1427, holds a 1707 altarpiece attributed to Churriguera with a canvas by Claudio Coello.
Church of San Esteban Protomártir
Monument
The church of San Esteban Protomártir, the oldest building in Fuenlabrada (Madrid), is first mentioned in a manuscript of 1427, during the visits of the clergyman Martín Sánchez to the churches of the archpriesthood of Madrid. Rebuilt on various occasions throughout its history, its origin not entirely established, it holds inside a high altar retable dated 1707 and attributed to José de Churriguera, with a central canvas attributed to the painter Claudio Coello. Every 26 December the feast of San Esteban is celebrated in honour of the church's patron saint.
Bosque Sur
Nature
The Bosque Sur, officially the Bosquesur peri-urban forest park, is a green-belt park laid out along the Culebro stream that occupies part of the municipalities of Fuenlabrada, Leganés, Alcorcón, Getafe and Pinto; in its first phase alone, covering some 323 hectares, more than 21,000 trees and around 82,000 shrubs of native species were planted. The whole, which officially includes the Polvoranca park, covers 561 hectares, equivalent to five times the Retiro park in Madrid. It is part of the future Arco Verde, a 75-kilometre ring that will link the region's major parks, begun in December 2019 with the planting of 350 trees in Boadilla del Monte.
Omelette Day of Fuenlabrada
Activity
Every 9 March recalls the old eighteen-kilometre pilgrimage to Cubas de la Sagra to venerate Santa Juana, on which walkers would stop at the spot known as Valdeserrano; that roadside meal is the origin of today's potato omelette festival.
Spring of los Cuatro Caños de Fuenlabrada
Monument
Dated 1859, it is the oldest of the surviving fountains in a town that tradition has springing up in 1375 around its springs; together with the Cruz de Luisa, of 1874, it makes up the small historic water heritage of the old centre.
