What to see and do in Caseres

Caseres
Village
Caseres is a municipality of 250 inhabitants in the Terra Alta of Tarragona, on the border with Aragon, with rugged relief due to the Sierra de Boja, with the Algars river as its boundary with Teruel. Its name means, according to the Alcover-Moll dictionary, the den where a person or animal lives, although tradition links it to hunting, represented on its coat of arms by a hunting dog. Already documented in 1153 as part of Horta de Sant Joan, it belonged first to the Templars and later to the Order of the Hospital. It preserves remains of the Iberian settlement of La Gessera, two ruined fortresses, the castle of Almudèfer and the Castell, and the church of Santa María Magdalena; a large part of the municipality is organized with dry-stone walls, a technique declared intangible heritage of humanity in 2018.
Castle of Almudèfer
Monument
Remains of a castle situated on a hill next to the Algars river, in Caseres (Terra Alta), overlooking the old settlement of Almudéfer and close to the chapel of Santa Anna. Of uncertain origin, Templar or Hospitaller, it is documented as a termenat castle in 1267; in 1280 it is mentioned as 'Mudéfer', when the Templar commander of Miravet granted the farmstead to two residents of Horta to repopulate it, and by 1358 it already had fifteen hearths. It occupied a strategic position on the border with Aragon. Today only ruined stretches of wall and two square-plan defence towers remain, one of them known as 'la presó'; in 1643 it was plundered by the troops of the Marquis de los Vélez during the Reapers' War.
The Castle of Caseres
Monument
Castle located in the municipality of Caseres, in the Terra Alta, declared a cultural asset of national interest. It is believed to have been a medieval manor house, possibly a fortified house linked to the Hospitaller commandery of Horta de Sant Joan. Its probable location is known, without much precision, near the village church, where remains might be preserved underground, although it is unknown whether it ever had any properly fortified feature.
Hermitage of Caseres
Monument
The hermitage of Caseres is that of Santa Anna d'Almudèfer, a small church attached to the castle of Almudèfer, in the municipality of Caseres (Terra Alta). Of the castle, now badly deteriorated, two square defensive towers remain, the best preserved known as la presó; it stands at 370 metres above sea level on a small hillock beside the Algars river, overlooking the old settlement of Almudéfer. It is documented as a completed castle in 1267 and is already mentioned in 1280 as Mudéfer; it belonged to the period of Christian rule, though it is not known whether its origin was Templar or Hospitaller, and it occupied a strategic position on the dividing line with Aragón, long a frontier between Christians and Arabs.
Mountain range of Cavalls
Nature
Mountain range in the comarca of Terra Alta (Tarragona), part of the Catalan Prelitoral range alongside the neighbouring Serra de Pàndols, with which it shares protection as a site of natural interest (PEIN) under the designation Serres de Pàndols-Cavalls. Its highest point is Punta Redona, at 659 metres. During the Spanish Civil War it was, together with the Serra de Pàndols, the scene of fierce fighting in the Battle of the Ebro, in which the Republican 11th Division and the International Brigades fought against Francoist troops.
Dry-stone architecture of the Terra Alta
Historical milestone
The margins, huts and cisterns raised without mortar organised for generations the cultivation of the vine and the olive on the slopes. The technique, still visible throughout the district, was recognised as intangible heritage in 2018.
