Castle of Almudèfer Monument · Caseres, Terra Alta, Tarragona Image of Caseres, not of the place itself. Remains of a castle situated on a hill next to the Algars river, in Caseres (Terra Alta), overlooking the old settlement of Almudéfer and close to the chapel of Santa Anna. Of uncertain origin, Templar or Hospitaller, it is documented as a termenat castle in 1267; in 1280 it is mentioned as 'Mudéfer', when the Templar commander of Miravet granted the farmstead to two residents of Horta to repopulate it, and by 1358 it already had fifteen hearths. It occupied a strategic position on the border with Aragon. Today only ruined stretches of wall and two square-plan defence towers remain, one of them known as 'la presó'; in 1643 it was plundered by the troops of the Marquis de los Vélez during the Reapers' War.
