What to see and do in Calaceite

Calaceite
Village
Calaceite is the cultural capital of the Matarraña, in the province of Teruel, declared a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (Spain's historic-artistic heritage designation) and a member of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España (association of Spain's most beautiful villages) since its founding. It forms part of Catalan-speaking Aragon and has 961 inhabitants (INE 2025). It sits at 511 metres above sea level on a hill that separates the waters of the Matarraña and Algás rivers, the latter forming the border with Tarragona, and its oldest core formed around a castle, today with no visible remains, where the original church of San Pedro was built over a former mosque. Its name comes from the Arabic qaala'a zayd, "castle of Zayd". It has hot summers, with highs of up to 30 degrees in July, and cold winters, with lows near 0 in January, and is rich in archaeological sites.
Historic Ensemble of Calaceite

Its oldest core formed around the medieval castle, and it preserves narrow streets, the Casa de la Vila from 1609 and the baroque church of the Assumption, completed in 1695. It belongs to the Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España association.

The archaeologist Juan Cabré Aguiló, a pioneer in the study of rock art and the protohistory of the Peninsula, was born in the town.
Iberian site of San Antonio de Calaceite
Nature
The Iberian settlement of San Antonio is an archaeological site located on the southern summit of the San Cristóbal hill, one kilometre from Calaceite, in the Matarraña area of Teruel. It was excavated between 1903 and 1919 by the Calaceite-born archaeologist Juan Cabré and Pedro Bosch Gimpera, and much of the recovered material is now kept at the Archaeological Museum of Barcelona. Fully excavated, it shows two occupation phases: an earlier one, from the 5th-4th centuries BC, on the upper part of the hill, and a second, from the 3rd century BC, which extended the core down the slope with terracing, a wall and towers, until its end with the Roman conquest. The dwellings, rectangular and up to two storeys high, are lined up along paved streets; near the main entrance, to the north, there was a pool for collecting rainwater.
