What to see and do in Mazaleón

Mazaleón
Village
Mazaleón, Massalió in Catalan, is a municipality in the Matarraña comarca, in the province of Teruel, at 359 metres above sea level, with 474 inhabitants and crossed by the N-420 road between Alcañiz and Catalonia. Its name comes from the Arabic Manzil al-A'ayun, "inn or lodging of the springs". The terrain, softened by the Matarraña river and several ravines, ranges between the 522 metres of the cerro Tremps and the 310 metres on the riverbank; the municipality borders seven other municipalities, among them Maella and Calaceite. Near the village, on a hill above the Matarraña, lies the pre-Iberian settlement of San Cristóbal, occupied since the 7th century BC, next to a necropolis. It also preserves the church of Santa María la Mayor and the ermita of San Cristóbal.
Church of Mazaleón
Monument
Church of Santa María la Mayor de Mazaleón, in the Doric order, in the town whose name comes from the Arabic manzil al-ayun, inn of the springs. Built upon a rock, Madoz's dictionary described it in the mid-19th century as a fairly solid and spacious church, with a tower fitted with a clock and two very regular bells. At that time it served as the parish church, attended by a parish priest and five beneficiaries (assistant clergy).

Protohistoric settlement of San Cristóbal
Historical milestone
The Cerro de San Cristóbal, in Mazaleón, was occupied from the 7th century BC by a protohistoric settlement predating Iberian culture, with aligned dwellings, a walled enclosure and a nearby necropolis. The town's name comes from the Arabic manzil al-ayun, 'inn of the springs', a legacy of the valley's Andalusi period.
