What to see and do in Arens de Lledó

Arens de Lledó
Village
Arens de Lledó is a municipality in the Matarraña at 381 metres above sea level, with 181 inhabitants, which received the title of villa in 1785. It sits on a hillside beside the Algars river, on the boundary with the Catalan Tierra Alta, opposite Horta de Sant Joan, where Picasso began his Cubist period, and near Calaceite, the comarca's cultural capital. During the Civil War its municipal archive was burned, with only the civil registry books saved, and in the post-war years many residents emigrated to Barcelona and Valencia. Its economy traditionally revolved around the olive tree: around 1950 there were 55 oil mills in the Matarraña valley, three of them here, now vanished. It preserves the Gothic church of la Asunción, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1983, and an Islamic-era weir on the Algars.
Church of Arens de Lledó
Monument
Church of the Assumption of Our Lady of Arens de Lledó (Matarraña, Teruel), a Gothic ashlar-built church constructed between the 14th and 15th centuries and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 February 1983. It preserves a medieval passageway arch and, in the presbytery, a decorative sculpture of two fish, the town's emblem. Of the original main altarpiece only a few panels from the late 15th century survive, now kept in the hermitage of San Hipólito.
