Hermitage of Caseres Monument · Caseres, Terra Alta, Tarragona The hermitage of Caseres is that of Santa Anna d'Almudèfer, a small church attached to the castle of Almudèfer, in the municipality of Caseres (Terra Alta). Of the castle, now badly deteriorated, two square defensive towers remain, the best preserved known as la presó; it stands at 370 metres above sea level on a small hillock beside the Algars river, overlooking the old settlement of Almudéfer. It is documented as a completed castle in 1267 and is already mentioned in 1280 as Mudéfer; it belonged to the period of Christian rule, though it is not known whether its origin was Templar or Hospitaller, and it occupied a strategic position on the dividing line with Aragón, long a frontier between Christians and Arabs.
