What to see and do in Cretas

Cretas
Village
Cretas, Queretes in Catalan, is a municipality in the Matarraña comarca, in the province of Teruel, located between Valderrobres and Calaceite, at 563 metres above sea level and with 559 inhabitants. In 1903 the Calaceite-born archaeologist Juan Cabré discovered in the Calapatá ravine, above the Roca de los Moros, rock paintings depicting deer, a bull, a horse and a goat; the find, published in 1907, attracted Henri Breuil and marked the beginning of the study of Levantine rock art, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. The village also stands on a former Iberian settlement from the 5th to 2nd centuries BC. Its plaza mayor preserves a column from 1584 bearing the village's historic coat of arms, and the church of la Asunción is a Mannerist building from the 16th century.

Traditional olive oil mills of the Matarraña
Curiosity
The entire traditional economy of the villages of the Matarraña revolved for centuries around olive growing and oil extraction, and each locality had several mills devoted to this work. According to data gathered for 1950, the Matarraña Valley then had 55 oil mills in operation, three of them in Arens de Lledó; today they have disappeared or are unusable, although the olive tree, together with the almond and the vine, remains one of the region's main crops.
