What to see and do in la Pobla de Mafumet

La Pobla de Mafumet
Village
La Pobla de Mafumet is a municipality of the Tarragonès, in the Tarragona market-garden area, at 98 metres of altitude; it has about 4,175 inhabitants. It was settled in Roman times due to its proximity to Tarraco, from where comes a hoard of 200 bronze coins of the emperor Claudius found within the territory; during the Reconquest it was called Guàrdia de Mafumet and belonged to the Falque family until passing, in the 15th century, to the curia of Tarragona. It traditionally lived off the vine, the olive, cereals and hazelnut, until the refinery installed in 1974 transformed its economy and drove up the population within the Camp de Tarragona complex. In the parish church of San Juan Bautista a 13th-century Romanesque carving of the Mare de Déu del Lledó is venerated, patroness of the municipality, moved there in 1801.

La Pobla de Mafumet Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major (patron saint festival) of la Pobla de Mafumet is celebrated on 2 February, the feast day of Our Lady of Lledó, whose title recalls the hackberry tree (lledoner) that appears on the municipality's coat of arms; the Agnus Dei on the same coat of arms represents Saint John the Baptist, patron of the town. The festivities are experienced in a municipality transformed since the mid-1970s by the start-up of the refinery that consolidated the petrochemical complex of the Camp de Tarragona, the largest in southern Europe, and which replaced much of the traditional crops of vines, olives, cereal and hazelnut with industry.
Refinery of la Pobla de Mafumet
Historical milestone
The refinery at la Pobla de Mafumet (Tarragonès), brought into operation in 1974, in the mid-1970s, consolidated the petrochemical complex of the Camp de Tarragona, the largest in southern Europe, and since then, together with the industries that depend on it, has been the basis of employment for the inhabitants of the municipality. It transformed a traditionally agrarian economy, based on the vine, the olive, cereals and the hazel, reducing the land devoted to cultivation, and triggered demographic growth in the surrounding towns.
