What to see and do in el Rourell

El Rourell
Village
El Rourell is a small municipality in the comarca of Alt Camp, in Tarragona, with the casal (manor house) of the Marquesses of Vallgornera. Its name derives from roure, oak, which appears on the village's coat of arms. Located 10.5 kilometres from Valls, the comarca's capital, and crossed by the Glorieta and Francolí rivers, it was part of the term of Codony until, between 1150 and 1158, it was given to Berenguer de Molnells; when he joined the Order of the Temple, the Comanda del Rourell was formed, dependent on that of Barberà. After the order's suppression it passed to the archbishopric of Tarragona and, in 1687, was sold to Francesc de Miquel; the Plegamans and Baldrich families, marquesses of Vallgornera, held rights over it. The casal is notable for its mullioned windows and its voussoired doorway. In 2011 it had 386 inhabitants.
Manor House of the Marquises of Vallgornera
Monument
Manor house in the municipality of el Rourell, comarca of Alt Camp, protected as a cultural asset of national interest and popularly known as El Castell. Square in plan and of large dimensions, it stands in the centre of the village; its most notable feature is the semicircular-arch portal with stone voussoirs and three coats of arms carved into the keystone and the springers. It preserves medieval elements, Gothic windows and two towers, although it was greatly altered in the 18th century. The first castle on the site was built in the late 12th century, after the village was ceded to the Order of the Temple; in 1703 the lordship was bought by Salvador de Baldric, whose family inherited the title of marquises of Vallgornera.
El Rourell Main Festival
Activity
