What to see and do in Perafort

Perafort
Village
Perafort is a municipality of the Tarragonès, in Tarragona, at 125 metres of altitude, formed by two settlements, Perafort and Puigdelfí, united into a single municipality in 1846; the latter gives its name to the territory's castle, one kilometre from Perafort. It preserves Roman archaeological remains, including two tombs and a headstone found in Puigdelfí and now in the Archaeological Museum of Tarragona; it was left depopulated during Saracen rule and was not resettled until after the Reconquest, under the lordship of Guillem de Claramunt. In Perafort stands the parish church of San Pedro, neoclassical and with three naves, from the 18th century, and in Puigdelfí that of San Sebastián, also from the 18th century. Since 2006 it has had the Camp de Tarragona railway station, on the high-speed line. It has 1,342 inhabitants.
Castle of Puigdelfí
Monument
Vanished castle, raised on a crag of Roman origin overlooking the Francolí river; Count Ramon Berenguer I granted it in 1066 to Ponç de Montoliu, whose family held it until 1330, when it passed to the Requesens family by marriage; they kept it until, in the late 15th century, it passed to the chapter of the cathedral of Tarragona. Today nothing remains of the castle except the urban layout itself -narrow, winding streets-, the names of streets and houses, and fragments reused in later buildings; much of its material was used to build the church.
