What to see and do in Constantí

Constantí
Village
Constantí is a municipality in the comarca of the Tarragonès, in the province of Tarragona, on the right bank of the river Francolí, next to the boundary with the provincial capital. In Roman times the territory had numerous agricultural villas linked to nearby Tárraco. The medieval town was established in 1153 and received its charter of settlement in 1159; archbishop Espàrec de la Barca ordered the construction of the castle, the first church and the wall, remains of which survive along with the les Caixes bridge. Castle and church were destroyed during the War of the Reapers, between 1641 and 1649. Today it has 7108 inhabitants and lives off the chemical industry and crops such as vines, olives and fruit trees.
Wall of Constantí
Monument
Wall documented since 1220, though it could be earlier, reinforced and restored in the 14th century: begun in 1363, it was completed between 1387 and 1388 by order of Joan I. It had an oval perimeter of about 910 meters, with twelve watchtowers and three gates; many houses of the old walled village were built making use of the wall itself. A stretch with a restored tower survives on Carrer de Sant Pere. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Bridge of les Caixes
Monument
Despite the name "bridge", this is actually an aqueduct of Roman origin, heavily renovated in medieval times, in the Barranc de la Ferrerota; it is about sixty meters long with three spans -one pointed arch and two round arches- through which passed a stream and the old road to Montblanc. Its Roman origin was discovered in 2008, when part of the medieval bridge collapsed, and it is linked to the nearby Roman villa of Centcelles; today it forms part of the Séquia dels Molins and still carries water. A locally protected cultural asset (Bien Cultural d'Interès Local).
Mausoleum and Roman villa of Centcelles
Historical milestone
The Centcelles complex brings together the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century, from the early imperial period, six kilometres from Tarragona and next to the Francolí river, which was remodelled in the 3rd and 4th centuries, when one of its main rooms was covered with a dome decorated with the oldest surviving early Christian mosaic on the Iberian Peninsula, with hunting scenes, biblical scenes and scenes of the four seasons. It has traditionally been interpreted as the mausoleum of a high-ranking figure of the Late Empire, although a new reading places its construction around the year 420 and links it to the praetorium of the comes Hispaniarum Asterius, in the midst of a military campaign against the barbarians. In the Middle Ages the building was reused as the chapel of San Bartolomé and later as a farmhouse until 1958.
