What to see and do in el Morell

El Morell
Village
El Morell is a municipality in the Tarragona market-garden area, in the comarca of the Tarragonès, with the casal dels Montoliu. Located at the centre of the triangle formed by Tarragona, Reus and Valls, it is the head town of the basic territorial area bearing its name. Its territory, of 5.9 km² and shaped like an inverted L, is flat and devoted mainly to irrigated farming, especially hazelnut, and to industry; it is crossed by the Francolí and the river Glorieta. From Roman times remains survive of a villa and a milestone from the road that linked Tarraco and Ilerda. The origins of El Morell go back to 1173, when archbishop Guillem de Torroja and king Alfonso I granted a plot of land to Berenguer dels Prats to settle it; at the end of the 12th century the first castle was built.
Manor House of the Montoliu
Monument
Also called Castell del Morell, it is a large casal with a square plan that crowns the hill of the village and today houses the town hall of el Morell. The first castle was built at the end of the 12th century, shortly after the lordship of Morell was created in 1173; by the mid-18th century it was in ruins, and in 1769, after a century-long lawsuit, Plàcid de Montoliu took possession of the lordship and ordered it demolished. The current building, newly built, was constructed somewhat further south of the original, commissioned in 1778 by Maria Josep de Bru i Descatllar and finished in 1794. The façade, with a triple balcony and the Montoliu coat of arms, preserves sgraffito decoration depicting knights. Inside there are rooms with fresco paintings on floral themes. Restored in 1994. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
