Refinery of la Pobla de Mafumet

The refinery at la Pobla de Mafumet (Tarragonès), brought into operation in 1974, in the mid-1970s, consolidated the petrochemical complex of the Camp de Tarragona, the largest in southern Europe, and since then, together with the industries that depend on it, has been the basis of employment for the inhabitants of the municipality. It transformed a traditionally agrarian economy, based on the vine, the olive, cereals and the hazel, reducing the land devoted to cultivation, and triggered demographic growth in the surrounding towns.
