What to see and do in els Pallaresos

Els Pallaresos
Village
Els Pallaresos is a municipality in the comarca of the Tarragonès, on the left bank of the river Francolí, with 5028 inhabitants, which has the castle of Perafort and the Casa Bofarull. Its early history is barely known: the oldest document mentioning it is a population count of the Comuna del Camp from 1392, and during the Middle Ages it was considered a mere district of Tarragona. The modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol left several works here, among them the side altars of the parish church of San Salvador and the Casa Bofarull, with a gallery that preserves remains of paintings by the artist himself and a lightning rod shaped like an angel crowning the building. The main festival is celebrated in August, coinciding with San Salvador.
Castle of Perafort
Monument
The remains of the castle of Perafort, also called castellot dels Pallaresos or castell de Bofarull, lie on the boundary between els Pallaresos and Perafort, in the Tarragonès. Of late medieval origin and today in ruins, the visible walls date from approximately the 16th century, although the precinct may go back to the 12th century. It had a square plan of more than 500 square metres, with a central parade ground, a defence tower to the south and buttresses on the western side; remains of three wells survive, though nothing remains of the main body. In 1391 King John I sold his rights to the archbishop of Tarragona, and in 1467 it also passed into archiepiscopal hands.
Bofarull House
Monument
Old manor house predating the 15th century, renovated between 1913 and 1933 by the modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol, a collaborator of Gaudí, who made extensive use of exposed brick and iron. It can be visited by prior reservation. A locally protected cultural asset (Bien Cultural d'Interès Local).
