What to see and do in els Garidells

Els Garidells
Village
Els Garidells is a small municipality at the southern tip of the comarca of Alt Camp, with its castle that headed its own feudal district, located on the left bank of the Francolí, up to whose edge reaches a narrow irrigated strip given over to hazelnuts, cereals and fruit trees, while the rest of the territory is rain-fed, with the vine predominating. The place's charter of settlement was granted in 1174 by Guillem de Claramunt to his brothers Arnau and Berenguer; the rights he had reserved over the place passed in 1229, by testamentary disposition, to the monastery of Santes Creus. Its population, which reached a peak of 440 inhabitants in 1857, later fell considerably to the 158 of the 1981 census.
Castle of els Garidells
Monument
The castle dels Garidells, in Gothic style, stands on the left bank of the Francolí river, on a tossal (hillock) of 132 metres, next to the stream that takes its name and crosses the whole municipality. The village was founded around it: the brothers Arnau and Berenguer Claramunt built it after receiving the place as a gift from their brother Guillem on 25 July 1174, a date by which the castle already existed, and they adopted the surname Garidells. In 1229 the rights of Guillem de Claramunt passed to the monastery of Santes Creus, to which it belonged until the abolition of the seigneuries in the 19th century. After the Spanish Civil War the owner sold it to the Tamarit family, who used it as a quarry. The complete floor plan is preserved, with walls up to eight metres high around a central nave with pointed arches.
