What to see and do in la Masó

La Masó
Village
La Masó is a small municipality in Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, situated at 115 metres above sea level very close to the chemical estate of the provincial capital. Its origins are unclear, although the original settlement may have formed from farms dependent on El Rourell; in the 14th century it appears as part of the commune of Camp de Tarragona, and in 1391 the archbishop bought the seigneurial rights from King John I of Aragon. Its coat of arms, with a cross pattée and a domus or inn, recalls the old Templar lords and the origin of its name. It preserves the church of Santa Magdalena, neo-Romanesque and from 1890, built above an earlier bell tower from around 1817, and a Modernista house by the architect Salas i Ricomà. Its economy is divided between irrigated hazelnuts and rain-fed carob and olive trees. It has 307 inhabitants.
Church of la Masó
Monument
The church of Santa Magdalena de la Masó (Alt Camp, Tarragona), located on Mayor Street, is in Neo-Romanesque style; construction began in the late 19th century and finished in 1890. It has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves and four bays, and a dome 12 metres in diameter topped on the outside by an octagonal cimborio. The bell tower, separate from the body of the church, is earlier, dating from around 1817: it belonged to a previous building that was already a Baroque adaptation of an even earlier structure. The symmetrical façade has a round-arched doorway decorated with Lombard arcading. The parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Tarragona and is listed as a bien de interés cultural local (a municipal-level heritage designation).
La Masó Main Festival
Activity
The summer Festa Major of la Masó, in honor of Santa Magdalena, is celebrated on 19 July; the municipality also celebrates a winter festa major around 20 January in honor of Sant Sebastià.
