What to see and do in el Catllar

El Catllar
Village
El Catllar is a municipality in the comarca of the Tarragonès that takes its name from the castle that gives it character: according to Alcover and Moll, Catllar comes from the Late Latin castĕllāre, "place defended by a castle". On 10 June 1641, during the siege of Tarragona in the War of the Reapers, the miquelets of Josep Margarit defeated the Spanish troops at the battle of El Catllar. When the castle's moat was excavated, a pre-Iberian settlement was discovered. Next to the river Gaià stands a curious monolithic construction known as l'Agulla. In 2015 the Mas d'Enric Penitentiary Centre was opened in the southwest of the municipal territory.
Castle of el Catllar
Monument
Castle raised in the upper part of the town, on a bend of the Gaià river, with documentary origins in the 11th century, though archaeological excavations point to a Muslim or even earlier origin. It belonged to the Montoliu family until the mid-14th century, then to the Requesens and Olzinelles families, and from the 15th century to the Queralt family until the 19th-century abolition of the lordships. The fortified complex, mostly from the 13th century, preserves part of the wall adapted to the terrain and two rectangular towers with arrow slits. Since 2002 it has been municipally owned and houses the Interpretation Center of the Castles of the Baix Gaià. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Wines of the Tarragona Designation of Origin
Food and drink
The vine spread through the comarca over the course of the nineteenth century and still occupies the terraces of the Gaià. The designation covers whites of macabeo and xarel·lo, reds of garnacha and cariñena, and the rancio wines and mistelas of the local tradition.
