What to see and do in la Secuita

La Secuita
Village
La Secuita is a municipality in the comarca of the Tarragonès, with 1845 inhabitants, which also includes the settlements of Argilaga, les Gunyoles and Vistabella. Its medieval resettlement was commissioned by the monastery of Santes Creus, which gradually acquired the various masos of the area until completing the purchase in the 13th century with Vistabella; the mayor came to be appointed by the monastery itself. It lives off agriculture, especially the vine. In Vistabella, the modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol built in 1918, at the request of the residents, the church of the Sagrat Cor, rustic in appearance and with simple materials such as stone and wood. The main festival is celebrated in August, and in winter San Pablo, co-patron of the municipality, is honoured.
Church of el Sagrat Cor de Vistabella
Monument
The church of the Sagrat Cor is a modernist temple in Vistabella, in the municipality of la Secuita, built in 1923 by Josep Maria Jujol at the commission of 1917 by the residents, who wanted a parish church of their own and built it themselves. Jujol was not limited to the architecture: he also designed the decorative elements, paintings, doors, lamps and grilles. The temple has a square plan with a single nave set diagonally, with the altar at one end and the porch at the other, and the masonry walls are covered by a Catalan vault over two parabolic brick arches. The paintings of the apse, destroyed in the Civil War, were repainted by Jujol's daughter. Declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2011, it carries a damp problem worsened in 2009 when the square was redeveloped.
