What to see and do in el Masroig

El Masroig
Village
El Masroig is a wine-growing municipality in the southern Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, at 192 metres of altitude, with 473 inhabitants. Its origins may lie in an old Arab house, although there is no documentary record before the 13th century; in 1309 it passed to the barony of Entença and afterwards to the county of Prades. Its economy is based on agriculture, with vines, olives and almonds, and it has had an agricultural cooperative since 1917, under the Ciurana designation of origin. The parish church, dedicated to Sant Bartomeu, is 18th-century and neoclassical, with a single nave and a cross-shaped plan with a large dome; on the outskirts stands the hermitage of the Virgin of les Pinyeres, rebuilt in the 18th century on Romanesque foundations. The main festival is celebrated on 24 August.
Church of el Masroig
Monument
The church of el Masroig is found in a village where, after phylloxera, winegrowers organised into agricultural unions that in 1917 built a cooperative winery that sustained the region's vineyards for almost a century.
Wine cooperativism of the Priorat
Historical milestone
After phylloxera and the fall in prices, the winegrowers grouped into agricultural unions that raised collective wineries in the first decades of the 20th century, such as that of Masroig in 1917. These cooperatives sustained the comarca's vines for almost a hundred years.
