Els Guiamets
Village
Els Guiamets is a municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, situated at its south-western edge, in the transition zone towards the Baix Camp and the Ribera d'Ebre. The most notable landscape feature of its territory is the Guiamets reservoir, built between 1951 and 1971, which can be seen clearly from the village itself and, above all, from the viewpoint built next to the hermitage of the Calvari. From it rises the Riera de les Olles, which together with the Barranc de Marmellans forms the backbone of the southern half of the territory, between the small ridges of the Coll de les Obagues, where the village stands, and the Coll de l'Egua. In the area known as la Tosseta, archaeological remains have been found. A path starting from Capçanes skirts the whole reservoir as far as the dam.
Church of els Guiamets
Monument
The church of Sant Lluís dels Guiamets is a Baroque parish church, rectangular in plan with three naves of three bays separated by pilasters, with a barrel vault and lunettes in the central nave. The octagonal bell tower rises at the foot of the church to a height of 36 metres, and the sober façade features an oculus and a stone doorway decorated with volutes. The parish was established as a vicariate in 1784 and raised to parish status in 1787; in 1791 the Bishop of Tortosa granted permission to build the new church, replacing the previous one, which was in poor condition. The church was partly destroyed in July 1936, losing archives and altars, and was restored precariously after the war. The village's festa major is celebrated between 20 and 25 August.
