What to see and do in Marçà

Marçà
Village
Marçà is a municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, standing at 315 metres of altitude, at the foot of the Turó de la Miloquera, in a territory drained by the Riera de Marçà towards the Siurana. It has 623 inhabitants. Its parish is already mentioned in a bull of Pope Anastasius IV of 1154, and the castle passed through the hands of the Castellvell, the Entença and the county of Prades. In 1611 Servite friars founded the convent of Sant Marçal on the outskirts of the village, of which very few remains survive today. The economy, traditionally agricultural, rests on vines, olives and almonds, with a cooperative that has marketed Montsant wines since 1913. The parish church of Santa Maria, from the 18th century, is neoclassical with baroque elements.
Castle of Marçà
Monument
The castle of Marçà, which gives its name to the municipality of Priorat (Tarragona), stands in ruins on the turó de la Miloquera hill, at 403 metres above sea level. Already documented in 1153, when it is mentioned by Ramon Berenguer IV, it may have had an earlier origin, in the Arab period; in 1174 King Alfonso the Chaste granted it to Guillem de Castellvell, and it later passed to the barony of Entença and the county of Prades, before becoming private property. Of its structure, built with roughly worked stones of 15 to 20 centimetres joined with lime mortar, only some collapsed sections and a stretch of wall remain today. It was declared an asset of national cultural interest on 8 November 1988.
Marçà Main Festival
Activity
Marçà's Festa Major d'Estiu is held on 15 August and the d'Hivern on 27 December. Its parish is already mentioned in a bull of Pope Anastasius IV in 1154, and in 1611 the Servite friars founded the convent of Sant Marçal, burned and sacked by the Carlists in 1835.
