What to see and do in Móra la Nova

Móra la Nova
Village
Móra la Nova is a municipality in the province of Tarragona at 31 metres of altitude, on the left bank of the Ebro, opposite Móra d'Ebre. It was born in the early 18th century out of several farmhouses in the territory of Móra d'Ebre, under the original name of Els Masos de Móra, and was split off from that municipality in 1830; its growth accelerated with the arrival of the railway. Móra la Nova station, on the line linking Reus with the Ebro valley, opened in 1891 and turned the village into a rail junction; today a former MZA company building from 1928 houses the Museu del Ferrocarril, opened in 2010. Two islands in the Ebro, Subarrec and Galatxo, shared with Móra d'Ebre, are part of the Natural Area of the Islands of the Ebro. The municipality now has 3,350 inhabitants.
Church of Móra la Nova
Monument
Church of la Mare de Déu del Remei, built in 1955 with the collaboration of the whole town after the old parish church was destroyed during the Civil War (1936-39); of modern architecture, with three naves separated by arcades on columns and a semicircular apse.
Móra la Nova Main Festival
Activity
The main festival of Móra la Nova, in the Ribera d'Ebre (Tarragona), is the most representative celebration of the municipality and is held on the first Sunday of August in honour of Sant Domènec de Guzmán. Among its events, the Nits Blanques dance stands out, a kind of social presentation for young women reaching adulthood, a distinctive tradition that sets this main festival apart from those of other towns in the comarca.
Museum of el Ferrocarril de Móra la Nova
Monument
It occupies the former steam locomotive depot, the most important in Spain, which in 1958 employed as many as a thousand people. Created from 2001 onwards by Jordi Sasplugas and a group of enthusiasts, and incorporated into the mNACTEC in 2014, it preserves locomotives such as the Bonita and the Mikado, among them the 241F-2238, the only surviving example of the type that hauled the great express trains between Barcelona and Madrid in the 1950s and 1960s, and a 23-metre turntable installed in 2010. Visitors can also see the station's large mechanical control panel, built in 1928 by the American company General Railway Signal and in use until 1983, as well as a steam-hauled tourist train that runs through the Costa Daurada and the inland comarques.
Arrival of the railway in the Ribera d'Ebre
Historical milestone
The line that linked Reus with the Ebro valley turned the village into a railway junction in 1891, with a station, a locomotive depot and workshops. The railway definitively displaced the river transport of goods.
