What to see and do in Garcia

Garcia
Village
Garcia is a municipality in the Ribera d'Ebre (Tarragona), at 73 metres of altitude, on the slopes of a small hill next to the river Ebro, on the border with the Priorat. An Iberian settlement and later a Roman town, it was conquered from the Saracens by Ramon Berenguer IV and later passed to the county of Prades and to the Ducal House of Cardona, whose dukes rebuilt the village on top of the mountain in 1565 to defend it better. Its castle, together with those of Tivissa, Móra and Marçà, had been granted in fief to Guillem de Castellvell by King Alfonso the Chaste in 1174. In 1938 the bombings of the Battle of the Ebro destroyed the upper part of the village, including its church, which was never rebuilt. Its wines are protected by the Tarragona designation of origin, in the Ribera d'Ebre subzone.
Castle of Garcia
Monument
Remains of Garcia castle (Ribera d'Ebre, Tarragona), located to the north of the town, behind the old parish church, at an altitude of 93 metres. It occupied a small hill with a flat summit about 15 metres in diameter, of which no visible remains survive today at surface level. Documented since 1153 as Carçeia in a deed of donation, in 1174 Alfonso the Chaste granted it to Guillem de Castellvell, thereby establishing the barony of Entença; in 1324 Garcia joined the county of Prades. It is declared a cultural asset of national interest.

Terra Alta-Ribera d'Ebre Designation of Origin
Curiosity
Winemaking tradition of Garcia, in the Ribera d'Ebre, where the cultivation of the vine, introduced around the mid-17th century, is now predominant in the municipality. The grapes are processed at the local agricultural cooperative under the Tarragona designation of origin, with the Ribera d'Ebre sub-designation. Alongside wine, the cooperative also produces oil; in the summer of 2015 it opened an agrobotiga where both products are sold, within an agricultural economy that has traditionally exported wine, oil and almonds along the Ebro.
Ebro River in Garcia
Nature
Stretch of the Ebro river as it passes through Garcia, in the Ribera d'Ebre (Tarragona), where the river receives the confluence of the Siurana. The town sits on the left bank of the Ebro, between the river, the Rec de Valls ravine and the Siurana itself, surrounded by terraced vineyards. Before the road to Móra la Nova opened in 1917, the crossing was made by boat; grain arriving from Aragon was once transported along its waters to a storehouse in the town, and since 1922 the Barcelona-Madrid railway has crossed the municipality 500 metres from the riverbed.
White garnacha of the Ribera d'Ebre
Food and drink
The garnacha blanca vines planted on the flats and the terraces of the river give wines of body, low acidity and the aroma of ripe fruit. They are made in twentieth-century cooperative wineries and in recent small family projects.
