What to see and do in el Lloar

El Lloar
Village
El Lloar is a municipality of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, situated at 219 metres of altitude next to the Montsant river, with 99 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was part of the barony of Cabacés under the bishopric of Tortosa until it became an independent municipality, split off from La Figuera, during the Peninsular War. Its church, dedicated to Sant Miquel Arcàngel and in neoclassical style, was built from 1777 onwards, replacing an earlier temple authorised by the bishop of Tortosa in 1558, of which remains survive next to the town hall; the municipality recovered the Catalan form of its name in 1989, after the earlier Castilianisation as Lloá. Its economy is based on the vine, under the Priorat designation of origin, with olives and almonds as secondary crops.

The church of el Lloar, dedicated to Sant Miquel Arcàngel, replaced in 1777 an earlier temple whose construction the bishop of Tortosa had authorised in 1558. The municipality recovered its Catalan name, El Lloar, in 1989, having officially been called Lloá.
