What to see and do in Bellmunt del Priorat

Bellmunt del Priorat
Village
Bellmunt del Priorat is a wine-growing municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, on the banks of the Siurana river, within the DOQ Priorat, with 290 inhabitants. Its lead mines, already worked in Roman times and active until the 19th century, came to employ about a hundred people in the middle of that century. The village, which belonged to the domains of the Charterhouse of Escaladei, was fortified and suffered the Carlist Wars: in 1838 it was stormed in search of lead for ammunition, and in 1874 an army of 2,500 men occupied it, plundered it and burned it after the surrender of the 140 volunteers defending it. Its present name was adopted in 1982, having been Bellmunt de Ciurana since 1916.
Church of Bellmunt del Priorat
Monument
The parish church of Santa Llúcia stands in Bellmunt del Priorat, a town whose galena galleries, worked industrially since the 19th century, went down more than six hundred metres and employed hundreds of miners until their closure in 1972. Pascual Madoz, in his geographical dictionary from the mid-19th century, already described it as served by a single chaplain; mass is still held there every Saturday, at six in the evening in winter and half an hour later in summer.
Lead mines of Bellmunt
Historical milestone
The lead mines of Bellmunt del Priorat, already worked in Roman times and industrially since the 19th century, experienced their heyday between 1920 and 1960, when they employed hundreds of miners and attracted heavy immigration that gave rise to its own mining colony; many workers combined the mine with growing vines and olives. The most important, the Eugènia mine, at the foot of the Turó del Sarraí, brought together the foundry, the workshops and the Casa de les Mines of the company Minas del Priorato S.A., and its galena galleries descended more than six hundred metres, within a network exceeding fifty kilometres. After activity ceased in 1972, part of the complex was restored as the Museum of the Mines of Bellmunt del Priorat, inaugurated in 2002.
