What to see and do in Capçanes

Capçanes
Village
Capçanes is a wine-growing municipality in the comarca of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, with Iberian settlement remains from the 3rd-1st centuries BC in its territory. It belonged to Tivissa until it achieved municipal independence in 1843. Here was born the guerrilla fighter Pere Joan Barceló, known as el Carrasclet, who fought against the troops of Philip V at the head of thousands of men, honoured with a monument in 1980. It has 444 inhabitants, who live off vines, almonds, hazelnuts and olives; its cooperative, founded in 1933, is known today for producing kosher wine. The parish church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, dates from 1791. The main festival is at the end of July.
