What to see and do in Conesa

Conesa
Village
Conesa is a walled medieval vila of Conca de Barberà, in the province of Tarragona, with 111 inhabitants. In 1043 Ramon Berenguer I granted these lands for their reconquest and resettlement, and from the 14th century it fell under the monastery of Santes Creus, which obtained full jurisdiction over it in 1383 and kept it until 1835. The town was walled in the 14th century; remains of the enclosure survive along with two gates, the Portal Reial and the portal de Santa Maria, framing narrow, medieval-looking streets. The parish church, dedicated to Santa María, is 14th-century and Gothic, with an earlier Romanesque arcade. In the abandoned village of Savella there is a Romanesque church of San Pedro, from the late 12th century, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1977. The main festival is celebrated on 15 August.
Church of Sant Pere de Sabella
Monument
Church of Sant Pere de Savella, next to the small, now uninhabited hamlet of Savella, in the western part of the municipal area of Conesa, in the Tarragona comarca of Conca de Barberà. It is a Romanesque building from the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century, with a single nave covered by a barrel vault and a semicircular apse, to which a rectangular side chapel was added in the 14th century; in the presbytery a 17th-18th-century altarpiece is preserved with a Gothic sculpture of Saint Peter, carved in stone towards the end of the 14th century, of natural size, holding the keys in his right hand and the book in his left. Conesa, whose 14th-century walled precinct still preserves two of its gates, depended for centuries on the monastery of Santes Creus.
Castle of Conesa
Monument
A manor house built on the site of the old castle, on the main square of Conesa (Conca de Barberà, Tarragona), at 699 metres above sea level. With a ground floor, one upper floor and an attic, with a double-pitched roof, it has round and segmental arches on the ground floor, and on the first floor four large windows bearing the coats of arms of the monastery of Santes Creus and of abbot Jeroni Contijoch. Inside it preserves porticoed halls and a dining room with wooden beams and coffered ceilings. Documented since 1123, in 1178 King Alfonso granted it to Ramon de Cervera, and in 1210 King Peter transferred it to Guillem de Guardialada; around 1285 it passed to the monastery of Santes Creus, which commissioned the present building from abbot Jeroni Contijoch in 1569. It is declared an asset of national cultural interest.
Walled Enclosure of Conesa
Monument
The walled precinct of Conesa (Conca de Barberà), declared an asset of national cultural interest, preserves part of the old 14th-century enclosure, with the gates of Sant Antoni or Reial and that of Santa Maria, made of irregular ashlars. Badly damaged by the construction of housing along its perimeter, it has been preserved thanks to the Saladern stream, which naturally surrounds it, forking around the settlement. Conesa had two walled precincts throughout its history: the first, of which no trace remains, surrounded the old castle or castellany, at the highest point of the town; the current one dates from the 14th century, when Conesa's importance as a market grew, and it came to have eight towers.
Wayside Cross of the Portal Reial
Monument
The wayside cross of the Portal Reial stands on the other side of the stream, facing the Portal Reial or Font gate of Conesa, outside the walls, at the fork of the old roads to Santa Coloma de Queralt and to Savallà del Comtat. On a base of two steps bearing the inscription «Santa Missió 1949» rises an octagonal plinth supporting a shaft in a single piece, eight metres high and fifty centimetres in diameter. The capital is decorated with sculpted groups of human figures and, above it, a small capital shows three coats of arms: that of the Catalan-Aragonese confederation, that of the Cervera family and that of the Montpaó family. The whole is crowned by a reconstructed cross, with two planes, decorated with motifs of stylised fleurs-de-lis.
Conesa Main Festival
Activity
Conesa celebrates its summer fiesta mayor in honor of the Virgen de Agosto and a winter fiesta mayor on a weekend in November; since 2010 it has also hosted the Mercat Vell, an antiques market held in the first week of August.
