What to see and do in Passanant i Belltall

Passanant i Belltall
Village
Passanant i Belltall is a municipality of the Conca de Barberà, with 149 inhabitants (INE 2025), at 714 metres above sea level, which brings together the settlements and castles of Passanant, Glorieta and la Sala. Already documented in 1079, it belonged to the counts of Cervera until 1261, when it passed to the Order of the Hospitallers, who controlled it until the end of the lordships; nothing remains today of the 15th-century castle of Passanant. The church of Sant Jaume, Baroque and from the end of the 17th century, preserves, despite the destruction of 1936, reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Mary in the Hall of the Divina Pastora. In El Fonoll, today a naturist settlement, stands a Romanesque church of Sant Blai belonging to the monastery of Santes Creus, and in la Pobla de Ferran there are megalithic sites with stones carved with solar symbols.
Castle of Passanant
Monument
Termenal castle that gives its name, together with that of Belltall, to the municipality of Passanant i Belltall, documented since 1123, when the brothers Ponç and Ramon de Cervera agreed to alternate their residence in it each year. It passed to the Òdena family in 1152 and in 1261 remained in the hands of the Knights Hospitaller, who kept it until the 19th century; by 1661 it was already in ruins. Of the fortress, of quadrangular plan and popular masonry from the 12th-13th centuries, the foundations survive, along with stretches of a tower wall, a cistern and a grain silo. Excavated in 1990 and 1999, it was restored in 2008 and is declared a cultural asset of national interest.
Castle of Glorieta
Monument
Glorieta Castle was built around 1162 in the hamlet of Glorieta, a village attached to the municipality of Passanant i Belltall (Conca de Barberà), reached by a road that runs from Passanant towards Forès, at 750 metres above sea level. Of the fortress one of its towers survives today, 16 metres high. The hamlet also boasts a communal oven, already mentioned in the 16th century and used until 1940, and a Gothic processional cross of silver and enamels, kept at the Diocesan Museum of Tarragona, which returns to the village every year for the patron saint's festival on 15 August.
Castle of la Sala
Monument
Remains of the castle of la Sala de Comalats, in the municipality of Passanant i Belltall (Conca de Barberà, Tarragona), at 757 metres above sea level. It consists of a rectangular tower about 6 metres on each side and 17 metres high, with three floors and a terrace, and an adjoining hall, built between the 12th and 14th centuries. First documented in 1079-1080 as a castle dependency, it was controlled in the mid-12th century by the Cervera family; it passed in 1177 to the Templars, in 1210 to Guillem de la Guàrdia Lada, in 1266 to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, in 1338 it was sold to the Gener family of Montblanc and in 1384 it passed to the monastery of Santes Creus, which kept it until 1835. Today the tower and the adjoining hall survive in ruins, partly buried; it is declared a National Cultural Asset.
