What to see and do in les Piles

Les Piles
Village
Les Piles is a municipality of the Conca de Barberà comarca, in the province of Tarragona, with 229 inhabitants (INE 2025) at 676 metres above sea level and an area of 23.39 km². It is made up of four settlements: Biure de Gaià, Guialmons, Les Piles and Sant Gallard, each with its own defined castle, among them that of Biure de Gaià, documented since 1072. It was reconquered at the end of the 10th century and came under the protection of the castle of Montclar at the beginning of the 11th; in 1072 it was sold to Ramon Berenguer I and later passed through several noble families. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Martin, was built in the 18th century in neoclassical style. The economy is based on dry farming, with wheat and barley as the main crops, followed by sunflower.
Castle of Biure
Monument
Biure Castle, already documented in 1072 when Oliver Bernat, son of Bernat Senfred de Gurb, was appointed castlan of the castles of Biure, Les Piles and Montclar, stands in the hamlet of Biure de Gaià, within the municipality of les Piles. In 1151 Guillem Aguiló ceded its tithes to the Order of the Hospitallers, who established a house of the order there in 1193 and eventually bought the castle in 1266; over time they came to found a priory that lasted until the 18th century. Already in the 20th century it passed to the viscounts of Bell-lloc, who carried out a total remodelling and turned it into the present castle-palace. Today it is a private residence and the interior cannot be visited.
Castle of les Piles
Monument
Castle that gives its name to the municipality of les Piles, in the comarca of the Conca de Barberà (Tarragona), catalogued as a fortified house of popular architecture. It is documented since 1057; in 1072 Oliver Bernat and his wife sold it to Ramon Berenguer I, and in 1096 Guerau Alemany de Cervelló swore fealty for it. The Timor family acquired it in 1234, and around 1380 it passed to the Boixadors family through marriage. Of the original building, much altered over time, only some ashlar blocks and a bastion with a round arch survive. It is declared a cultural asset of national interest.
Castle of Guialmons
Monument
Of Guialmons Castle, around which the settlement of the same name grew up in the municipality of les Piles, only the northwest wall survives, a continuation of that of the church of Santa Maria de Guialmons, behind which its remains stand. The wall stretch is about ten metres long and five metres high, with regular masonry in the first five metres and more deteriorated in the rest. The place is documented since 1080, and the first reference to the castle is from 1132, when Alaric de Timor granted his son Ramon several castles, among which this one figured. In the 14th century it passed to the Boixadors family through the marriage of Francesca de Timor to Berenguer de Boixadors, and later to the counts of Savallà, who kept the lordship until the disentailment of the 19th century.
Castle of Sant Gallard
Monument
Old castle of the hamlet of Sant Gallard, in the municipality of les Piles, in the Conca de Barberà, catalogued as a cultural asset of national interest. No identifiable remains of the medieval building survive; the present structure, with a ground floor, an upper floor and an attic, preserves a bread oven, a millstone and a stone basin, as well as a polychrome relief of the Calvary above the arch of the central hall. The first documentary reference dates from 1179, when Adalbert de Queralt bequeathed half of the lordship to the monastery of Santes Creus, which obtained the other half in 1247 through the inheritance of Ramon Adalbert de Queralt and kept the castle until the Mendizábal disentailment.
