What to see and do in la Selva del Camp

La Selva del Camp
Village
La Selva del Camp is a town in the comarca of Baix Camp, in Tarragona, with its castle and the towers of the Sant Rafel wall. Its municipal area, of 35.18 km², stretches from the plain to the first foothills of the Sierra de la Mussara, and is crossed by the Sisena stream, a tributary of the Francolí. Among its heritage are the Paborde castle, from the 12th century and today a cultural centre, the convent of Sant Rafael, built after 1635 with the legacy of Rafael Ripollès, the convent of Sant Agustí, from 1598-1632, and the Pont Alt, documented in the 13th century, as well as the walls surrounding the old quarter. The town received its charter of settlement on 13 May 1164, granted by the archbishop Hug de Cervelló. It had 5,598 inhabitants in 2014.
Towers of the Wall of Sant Rafel
Monument
Remains of the medieval wall of la Selva del Camp, in the Baix Camp. They form part of the walled precinct that protected the town, reinforced in 1363 by order of King Peter the Ceremonious. Of that medieval defensive system only fragments such as these towers survive today, witnesses to the fortified perimeter that once surrounded the urban centre.
Castle of la Selva del Camp
Monument
The Castell de la Selva del Camp stands at the northern end of the historic centre of la Selva del Camp, a municipality in the Baix Camp, in Tarragona. It dates from the 12th century, when it was the residence of the provost, an ecclesiastical dignity of the chapter of Tarragona; after this office was abolished in 1410, it passed to the archbishop in 1412, under whose rule it remained until the agrarian reforms of the 19th century, after which it served as a school and a Civil Guard barracks. Excavations in 1986 uncovered the original structure, rectangular in plan, with a north facade that retains double-splayed windows in worked stone. Restored, it now functions as a cultural centre, with temporary exhibitions and the permanent exhibition L'obra d'oller, protected as a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's designation for cultural heritage of national interest).
Settlement charter of la Selva del Camp
Historical milestone
On 13 May 1164 the villa received its charter of settlement and came under the dominion of the archbishop of Tarragona, a seigneury that lasted until 1823. That dependence explains the walls, the castle and the ordered layout of the old town.
