L'Albiol
Village
L'Albiol is a mountain municipality in the province of Tarragona, in the Baix Camp, with 557 inhabitants (INE 2025) and a territory ranging between 230 and 985 metres in altitude, with the village itself at 823 m. Its name comes from the Latin alveolu, 'place where waters collect'. In 1158, Count Ramon Berenguer IV granted the place to Joan de Martorell to resettle and fortify it; the castle, already built by 1167 and documented in 1194, was dismantled between 1646 and 1654 during the Reapers' War (Guerra dels Segadors), and today remains of its wall and towers survive. It lives mainly from agriculture, with vineyards and hazelnut groves as its main crops. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Michael, was built in 1791 and preserves a polychrome carving of the saint from the 18th century. The main festival is celebrated in September, for Saint Michael.
Castle of l'Albiol
Monument
The castle of l'Albiol, a border castle that gives the municipality its name, stands in ruins on a hill at about 866.5 metres of altitude. It was of large proportions, and stretches of wall still survive with some half-collapsed square towers and the central buildings. A castle of Saracen origin, it was taken by Guillem de Claramunt shortly before the conquest of Siurana; in 1158 Count Ramon Berenguer IV ceded it to Joan de Martorell with the charge of rebuilding it, and he in turn passed it on to the archbishopric of Tarragona. It was torn down by order of the Castilian troops in 1654, during the War of the Reapers, with only a small part surviving since then; the construction of the present parish church of Sant Miquel probably dates from that same period.
