What to see and do in Alcover

Alcover
Village
Alcover is a town in Alt Camp, in Tarragona, at the foot of the spurs of the Sierra de la Mussara, with 5,362 inhabitants (INE 2025) and a walled old town that preserves the church of la Puríssima Sang. It is crossed by the Glorieta river, which flows down from the Prades mountains and empties into the Francolí. It received a charter of settlement in 1166, after Ramon Berenguer IV donated the municipality to the Archbishop of Tarragona in 1127, and in 1809 it was the scene of the Battle of the Pont de Goi during the Peninsular War. Between the 16th and 17th centuries it was a centre of banditry in the comarques of Camp, Conca and Garrigues, with two rival gangs, the Porrones and the Buitres, a period that coincided with a notable economic resurgence of the town.
Walls and Gates of Alcover
Monument
The walls of Alcover, in Alt Camp (Tarragona), were built in the 14th century by order of King Peter the Ceremonious, although the enclosure is documented since 1060 and the first walled perimeter is recorded in 1245. They had eighteen towers and at least three gates, of rammed earth with walls about a metre thick. In the 17th century a second enclosure was added to protect the expansion towards the south, with a new gate opened in 1634. Today four towers survive —two next to the Sant Miquel gate, that of Ca Ballester and that of Ca Tatxó— and two gates, that of Sant Miquel and that of la Saura; the rest disappeared when incorporated into houses. The complex is a cultural asset of national interest.
Church of la Puríssima Sang
Monument
The church of la Puríssima Sang, in the centre of Alcover (Alt Camp, Tarragona), is a Romanesque temple from the late 12th century built in red ashlar stone. It has a single nave of ten by thirteen metres, a semicircular apse, walls two metres thick, sculpted capitals inside the apse and a rose window at the foot, facing a doorway of great austerity. Formerly known as la Mesquita, it was replaced as the parish church by a new temple at the end of the 15th century. Declared a historical-artistic monument in 1931, it was left almost in ruins after the damage of the Civil War, which in 1937 caused the loss of its altarpieces. Recovered as an urban space, it reopened to the public on 11 September 1979.
Defence Towers of Mas Mont-ravà
Monument
The defensive towers of Mas Mont-ravà stand beside this isolated farmhouse of Alcover, in the comarca of Alt Camp (Tarragona), at the confluence of the Glorieta and Micanyo rivers. The main fortification is a rammed-earth tower of slightly rectangular plan, with an elongated annexed body on its north-western side, measuring almost 6 metres wide by 6.5 long inside; below it, next to the farmhouse, stands a later, smaller tower. The farmhouse has been known since the 12th century: in 1163 the count-king Alfonso the Chaste granted it to Pere Voltor, and in 1632 it took its current name when the heiress married a member of the Mont-ravà family.
Convent of Santa Anna
Monument
The Convent of Santa Anna is a monument declared a cultural asset of national interest on the outskirts of Alcover, at the foot of Mount Calvari, next to the road to Mont-ral. Its most notable elements are the church, of rectangular plan with a single nave and eight chapels —which until 2009 was very deteriorated, with the roof collapsed—, and the cloister, of square plan, formed by two storeys of galleries with round arches opening onto the former cells; the lower galleries are covered with groin vaults and the upper ones with beams. A door connected the church with the cloister. Next to the complex the gardener's house is also preserved, today private property, with its pens.
Alcover Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Alcover is celebrated in a town whose quarries have for centuries yielded a laminated limestone used for roofing and paving slabs, in which fossilized Triassic fish, insects and plants have been found, now displayed in the local museum.
The stone of Alcover and the Triassic fossils
Historical milestone
The quarries of the district have for centuries extracted a laminated limestone that was used for roofs and flagstones. In its laminae fossilised fish, insects and plants of the Triassic appeared, a reference collection exhibited in the local museum.
