What to see and do in Castellvell del Camp

Castellvell del Camp
Village
Castellvell del Camp is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona, with 3,002 inhabitants, whose territory, marked out in 1206 by Archbishop Ramon de Rocabertí, belonged for centuries to Reus before its current boundaries were fixed in 1854; despite its name, there is no archaeological evidence that a castle ever stood there. The town was walled during the Reapers' War and served as a refuge for the bandit Carrasclet in 1719. Its church, dedicated to Saint Vincent, in neoclassical style, is documented in 1599 and was remodelled in 1702; the baroque altarpieces it housed, among them one by the sculptor Lluís Bonifàs i Sastre, were burned in 1936. On the outskirts, the Santa Anna hermitage, from the 15th century, served as a plague hospital and as a fort during the First Carlist War.
Church of Castellvell del Camp
Monument
Church of Sant Vicenç de Castellvell del Camp, in the Baix Camp, in Baroque style, documented before 1599 and rebuilt in 1702, a date inscribed above the portal; in 1936 an altarpiece by the sculptor Lluís Bonifàs i Sastre was burned. It has a single-nave plan with side chapels connected to one another, covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and a polygonal chancel with ribbed vaulting. The portal, a round arch flanked by pilasters, is topped by a decorated triangular pediment; at the foot, on the Gospel side, stands the brick bell tower. The walls are of rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners. It is included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
