What to see and do in Vilabella

Vilabella
Village
Vilabella is a municipality in Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, situated at 254 metres above sea level near the Gaià river, whose name might derive from a Roman villa belonging to a certain Abellus. During the Arab period the territory remained practically depopulated, since the Gaià was for a long time a natural border. Of the old wall only a round arch survives from the gate dedicated to San Pedro, and of the medieval castle, a staircase in Catalan Gothic style; next to them stands Cal Cristí, the former house of the village's castlà, in Renaissance style. It also has an ethnological museum, opened in 1970, dedicated to the Catalan peasantry. Its economy is based on vine growing for wines and cavas. It has 724 inhabitants (INE 2025).
The Castle of Vilabella
Monument
El Castell de Vilabella, in the Tarragona comarca of Alt Camp, is a rectangular manor house dated to the 15th century, with later reforms that mainly affected its façade. It combines Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements, with flattened arches inside and a semicircular-arch portal with large regular voussoirs. It belonged to the Pontarro family between the 15th and 18th centuries and later passed to the Castellví family; in the early 19th century it received the name Cal Cristí. Some historians place the site of the village's old castle here, owing to the remains of fortified elements it preserves at the rear. It is protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest and stands on carrer de Sant Pere.
