What to see and do in Vespella de Gaià

Vespella de Gaià
Village
Vespella de Gaià is a municipality in the comarca of Tarragonès, with 502 inhabitants, traditionally devoted to the farming of vines, olives, carob and hazelnut. Its castle, now vanished, belonged to the Queralt family between 1314 and 1390 and afterwards to the counts of Barcelona; only its old chapel remains standing, the church of Sant Miquel, a Romanesque building with a pointed vault that preserves a 1579 altarpiece dedicated to the Mare de Déu del Roser. The village celebrates its main festival in honour of Sant Miquel on 29 September.

Gaià River through the Tarragonès
Nature
The Gaià river, 59 kilometers long, crosses the Tarragonès through the municipalities of El Catllar, La Riera de Gaià, Altafulla, Salomó, Vilabella and Bràfim, and flows into the sea at the beach of Tamarit, near Altafulla, where it forms a lagoon protected as a wildlife reserve since 1995. Its last eleven kilometers usually run dry because the Catllar dam retains the water for the petrochemical industry.
Carob of the Camp de Tarragona
Food and drink
The carob tree shares the dry lands of the comarca with the almond and the olive. Its fruit has been used as fodder and as a substitute for cocoa, and today it is being recovered in flours and sweets made with the carob gathered on the margins of the Gaià.
