What to see and do in Salomó

Salomó
Village
Salomó is a municipality in the comarca of Tarragonès, in the province of Tarragona, with 519 inhabitants, situated in a valley on the banks of the Gaià river, halfway between Tarragona, Valls and El Vendrell. It was formed during the medieval resettlement and is first documented in the 11th century, although as a geographical feature; the first reference to the town dates from 1254. It has traditionally lived from agriculture, above all vines, olives and palms, with an agricultural cooperative since 1962. Its parish church of Santa María, today in Baroque style, was built on an old 13th-century Romanesque chapel, from which the portal is preserved, with reliefs of castles and of Greek and Maltese crosses. In May the Sant Crist dance, of national interest, is celebrated.

It has a Latin-cross plan inscribed in a rectangle, extended between the 18th and 19th centuries with the chapel of the Santo Cristo (1708-1715), with a Greek-cross plan and an apse with eight windows, decorated with frescoes of the evangelists and gilded floral motifs. It was restored from 1962 onwards by the architect Jordi Bonet i Armengol, and has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural Local (local-level heritage protection designation) since 2017.
