What to see and do in Puigpelat

Puigpelat
Village
Puigpelat is a municipality in the comarca of Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, at an altitude of 252 metres on a small rise in the plain bounded by the rivers Francolí and Gaià. It preserves archaeological remains from Roman times and, from its medieval past, one of the gates of the old wall. After the phylloxera of the late 19th century, almond, hazelnut and carob trees took up much of the land in Alt Camp left by the vine, crops that still mark the comarca's agricultural landscape today. Its most notable building is the church of Santa Maria, which preserved a 13th-century carving of the Virgin of the Milk, now in the Museo Diocesano of Tarragona. It has around 1,220 inhabitants.

Food and drink
After phylloxera, the almond, the hazel and the carob occupied the lands left by the vine and still mark the agricultural landscape. The comarca's almond and hazelnut supply turróns, picada sauces and the confectionery of the festa major.
