What to see and do in Montferri

Montferri
Village
Montferri is a municipality of 502 inhabitants in the comarca of Alt Camp, in Tarragona, on the banks of the river Gaià and next to the settlement of Vilardida. It was formed in the early 20th century by the merger of the former municipalities of Puigtinyós and Vilardida, and kept the name Puigtinyós until 1917; it lives from rain-fed farming, poultry raising and livestock. In its territory stand the castle of Rocamora and the 12th-century tower of Montserrat or del Moro, as well as the parish of Sant Bartomeu. The architect Josep Maria Jujol designed the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Montserrat in 1926, with parabolic arches of exposed brickwork, which was left unfinished due to the war and lack of funds until work resumed decades later.
Tower of Montferri
Monument
The tower of Montferri, also known as Torre del Moro, dates from the 12th century and stands in the municipal territory of Montferri (Alt Camp, Tarragona). It is declared a cultural asset of national interest, in recognition of its value as a defensive construction of medieval origin.
Castle of Rocamora
Monument
The castle of Rocamora, formerly called the castle of Montferri or of Puigtinyós, was built to defend the border area of the Gaià river during the Reconquest and was declared a cultural asset of interest in 1985. Documented since 1010, when it depended on the term of Castellví de la Marca and may have had an Arab origin, in 1072 it appears as a castle subsidiary to the castle of Castellví, linked to the Castellvell family. In 1229, shortly before setting off for the conquest of Mallorca, Guillem II de Montcada bequeathed the castle, then called Puigtinyós, to the monastery of Santes Creus, which in the 14th century sold it to Arnau de Llobets. The building, of irregular plan with a two-pitch roof at different levels, retains its much-modified façade, with segmental-arch openings.
Montferri Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Montferri is celebrated in the town where the architect Josep Maria Jujol designed, in 1926, a sanctuary of parabolic arches in exposed brick that was left unfinished due to the war and lack of funds; work resumed decades later and the building was completed and consecrated in 1999.
Shrine of la Mare de Déu de Montserrat de Jujol
Monument
The sanctuary of the Virgin of Montserrat of Montferri, the work of Josep Maria Jujol, stands on a 50-metre hillock to the northeast of the village. The design made use of the slope of the hill by projecting the Virgin's camarín forward, linked to the incline by parabolic arches; a dome centres the presbytery over a triangular floor plan, with a sober construction of cement and sand. Building began between 1926 and 1928 on land donated by the Vives family of Montferri, one of whose members, the Jesuit Daniel Maria Vives, promoted the work. Work stopped in 1930 for lack of funds and was not resumed because of the Civil War; Jujol visited the unfinished sanctuary after the war, but was discouraged by its state. It was restored in the early 1990s, and completed and consecrated in 1999.
